Toronto lawyer Rocco Galati tries to block another Harper judicial appointment

OTTAWA—The Conservative government is on another collision course over its latest judicial appointment for Quebec.

Toronto lawyer Rocco Galati has filed for an injunction to block the appointment of Federal Court of Appeal Justice Robert Mainville — reportedly on the shortlist last summer for the Supreme Court of Canada — to the Quebec Court of Appeal.

Anticipating the government’s next step would be to slide Mainville into the next Supreme Court of Canada vacancy coming up in November, Galati is challenging Mainville’s eligibility under the 1867 constitution for either job.
